Burkina Faso v Cameroon – Who goes to the quarterfinals?

Published:

With one point separating between them, Burkina Faso face hosts Cameroon on Sunday (24 January 2021) at the Ahmadou Ahidjou Stadium in Yaoundé, with the quarterfinals ticket at stake for both sides.

Hosts Cameroon made a good start to their Total CHAN 2020 Group A campaign, defeating Zimbabwe then having a draw with Mali to gather four points, one more than Burkina Faso that lost to Mali before defeating Zimbabwe to stand on 3 points.

A draw will be sufficient for the Indomitable Lions to reach the quarterfinals, while Burkina Faso needs victory to guarantee their place in the final eight.

Cameroon wants to be the fourth host nation in six editions to go beyond the group stage. Only Cote d’Ivoire (2009) and South Africa (2014) failed to do so.

Indomitable Lions coach Martin Mpilé can count on his entire squad for the encounter, with captain Jacques Zoua likely to return. The 2017 African champion, who missed last game against Mali, should be available against the Stallions.

On the other side, Burkina Faso are preparing in high mood. After having their first ever win in CHAN history last Wednesday, the Stallions hope to cap on this momentum and cut their quarterfinals ticket.

However, Burkina Faso coach Seydou ‘Krul’ Zerbo admitted it’s not going to be an easy mission against the hosts. “We are going to fight to win and qualify,” he said.

This Sunday's meeting is the second between Cameroon and Burkina Faso in CHAN history. They had a 1-1 draw in Morocco three years ago.
